A year ago, the name David Corenswet might not have rung a bell. But with his recent casting as Clark Kent in James Gunn’s forthcoming “Superman” film, his name has been on the lips of many. After the unfortunate conclusion of the DC Extended Universe and Henry Cavill’s tenure as the iconic Man of Steel, Gunn revealed that the first film from the newly formed DC Studios would be his “Superman” project, starring Corenswet.
This role is set to be Corenswet’s stepping stone to stardom. Before landing the part in the first DC Studios production, the Juilliard graduate had notable roles in a variety of high-profile films and TV series. He appeared in Ti West’s A24 horror film “Pearl” as a projectionist, played aspiring actor Jack Castello in Ryan Murphy’s “Hollywood” on Netflix, and even had a role in David Simon’s underrated HBO series “We Own This City,” where he portrayed narcotics investigator David McDougall. However, none of these roles propelled Corenswet into the limelight quite like Gunn’s “Superman” is expected to.
Earlier this year, we got a sneak peek of Corenswet donning the Superman suit, with an image that also showcased one of Hollywood’s biggest stars: a massive sky laser. But before Corenswet becomes a household name, let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit his career journey. Thanks to Rotten Tomatoes, we can rank an actor’s work, giving us the perfect opportunity to discuss Corenswet’s top-rated film.
David Corenswet’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes
A24
While we eagerly await “Superman,” 2024 has provided us with a dose of David Corenswet in Ned Benson’s romantic dramedy “The Greatest Hits” and Apple’s “Lady in the Lake” miniseries, both featuring Corenswet in supporting roles. We’ve also seen him in “Twisters,” a film that seemingly hinted at his upcoming Superman performance. As recalled by director Lee Isaac Chung, after auditioning for Clark Kent during the filming of “Twisters,” Corenswet brought a touch of Superman back to the set with him.
Before his adventures in legacy sequels and auditions to play the savior of DC’s troubled cinematic universe, Corenswet had a minor role in A24’s horror movie “Pearl,” where he starred alongside the eccentric Mia Goth. In her review for /Film, Lex Briscuso described the second installment in Ti West’s “X” trilogy as “an ambitious and bold work of horror that questions what it means to deserve love and the negative things we sometimes do to attain it.” While Goth was undoubtedly the star of this 2022 sequel, according to a Rotten Tomatoes ranking, “Pearl” is also Corenswet’s highest-rated project.
The film currently holds a 92% rating, making it the second-highest rated film in West’s trilogy, just behind “X” with its 94% rating. For Corenswet, this is the highest score he’s received on the Tomatometer so far.
Interpreting David Corenswet’s Rotten Tomatoes ranking
DC Studios/Warner Bros.
Rotten Tomatoes is a complex site to decipher. With numerous critiques about the site’s flaws, it’s challenging to interpret this recent ranking of an actor’s work. This is the same site that claims only two perfect war movies exist in cinema history and that Sean Connery’s best film is “Darby O’Gill and the Little People.” But maybe you concur that no war film has surpassed “Grave of the Fireflies” or “A Man Escaped,” and perhaps you appreciate Connery’s Disney debut. Let’s delve deeper into “Pearl” and its RT score.
The 92% score seemingly represents an average rating of 7.9 out of 10. This is because 7.9 is the actual average rating critics gave this movie. The 92% simply signifies that 92% of the reviews aggregated by Rotten Tomatoes were “positive.” However, anyone familiar with the intricacies of the Tomato machine knows that the term “positive” can be ambiguous in this context. Often, RT aggregators must decide whether, as the website states, some reviews are “mixed-positive or mixed-negative.”
When examining David Corenswet’s filmography on RT, “Pearl” stands out as the highest-rated film. However, as his career progresses, we can expect many more critically acclaimed projects. And given what we know, this RT ranking will lose its significance when multiple projects vie for the top spot. Who knows, perhaps “Superman” will surpass “Pearl” — which would mean Corenswet’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes would be one where he is the star.
