Traveler’s Hymn is a top-down, grid-based, open-world (and breathing) adventure game set in a dim fantasy land. The set of blocks is lovely, as are the tiny dialogue windows and menus, and the gentle hopping of the backpack-wearing characters as they walk. Basically, it looks like it’s worth everyone’s time, especially since there’s one huge twist here – it’s completely free.
Aquatic Ranger Studio developers were asked xwitter why was the game free to play considering people would probably pay good money for something that looks this breezy. They said it was their “first attempt at game development” and that “we only spent 4 months on it because we started as an experimental project.” Basically, they felt the game was good enough to publish but was “a little lacking in content” so they didn’t want to charge for it.

The developers say the game starts at about “4-5 hours” during which you’ll explore, fight, and earn nippy rewards. What’s amazing is that there are over 20 unique locations, over 100 enemies and NPCs, and over 100 items. All in a three-person team within a few months? Scandalous. Apparently there is also a hunger system, but we can pretend it doesn’t exist.
There are no plans for further development at this time, but they will likely see how it performs and decide if it’s worth investing the time to develop it into an actual, full-fledged release, perhaps via Steam Early Access. We’ll just have to wait and see.
If you want to give it a try, Traveler’s Hymn is available starting today Couple.
