“NCIS” has been a mainstay on television since its debut in 2003, with a revolving door of actors that have entertained audiences over the years. One of the most shocking exits was Mark Harmon, a cornerstone of the franchise, who decided to depart from “NCIS” due to his desire for a less hectic schedule and interest in other ventures. Similarly, Pauley Perrette, after facing on-set bullying, swore off acting completely post her exit from the show. Michael Weatherly, on the other hand, simply grew weary of his role as NCIS Senior Field Agent Anthony DiNozzo, culminating in his exit after 15 seasons.
“The timing was perfect. I was simply exhausted by ‘NCIS’ and I needed a new challenge,” Weatherly shared during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in 2016, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “Change can be as refreshing as a break.” He cited the rigorous 22-episode seasons as a major contributor to his burnout, having been a part of the “NCIS” fold for over a decade. He felt his character had completed his arc, and it was time to sign off.
The silver lining, however, is that Weatherly’s departure wasn’t permanent. The actor made a comeback as a guest star on the 21st season of “NCIS” and is slated to feature in a spin-off series with another beloved franchise veteran.
Tony and Ziva to headline an NCIS European spin-off
CBS
When CBS announced the cancellation of “NCIS: Hawai’i”, it seemed like the network was planning to streamline its prized franchise. Contrary to that, the network introduced “NCIS: Origins,” a prequel series highlighting the early life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) and featuring Mark Harmon as the narrator. A spin-off featuring Michael Weatherly is also on the horizon, with Anthony DiNozzo and Ziva David (portrayed by Cote de Pablo) set for a European escapade.
“NCIS: Tony and Ziva”, as the show is aptly titled, will bring the titular couple back together after Ziva is presumed dead and DiNozzo is left to take care of their child in her absence. The stakes get higher when Tony’s security company falls under attack, compelling the pair to hunt down the mysterious perpetrator.
While an official release date for “NCIS: Tony and Ziva” is yet to be announced, Paramount+ has hinted at a 2025 release. Whether this marks DiNozzo’s final case or reignites Weatherly’s enthusiasm for the franchise is yet to be seen. As “NCIS” has shown, some actors can never truly say goodbye.
