Bioware has faced criticism in recent years, from the addition of multiplayer to Dragon Age: Inquisition to the disappointment of Anthem. The future of the legendary studio now rests on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, set to release a decade after Inquisition and 15 years after Origins. The upcoming game aims to restore fan confidence in Bioware’s abilities.
Having had the chance to play a preview of Veilguard for seven hours, it seems that Bioware is on the right track. Dragon Age: The Veilguard delivers on fans’ expectations for rich lore and storytelling, as well as introducing new elements to gameplay.
During the preview event, I explored various areas and characters in the game, partook in different missions, and used the character creator to customize my own Rook. The detailed options in Veilguard’s character creator surpass those of Baldur’s Gate 3, offering a truly immersive experience.

Thedas: 10 Years Later
In this preview, I will focus on gameplay rather than delving into spoiler-heavy story details. As a long-time fan awaiting the release, my aim is to preserve the purity of the gaming experience by avoiding significant plot revelations.
From what I experienced in the preview, the protagonist Rook embarks on a journey uncovering hidden parts of Thedas, engaging with factions and visiting intriguing locations. The depth and familiarity with the world presented in Veilguard are noteworthy, promising an engaging narrative.
One captivating location is Treviso, a picturesque city in Antiva, offering a blend of European and Near Eastern aesthetics. The art design and attention to detail surpassed expectations, immersing players in the rich world of Thedas.
My only critique, to avoid spoilers, is that the dialogue and choice system can feel overly explanatory at times. Bioware could benefit from leaving more to the player’s imagination rather than explicitly stating every character interaction.
Becoming the hero Thedas needs
Players will notice a shift in movement mechanics, with characters displaying more agility and flexibility, akin to games like Horizon Forbidden West. Combat focuses on Rook, offering a faster-paced, action-oriented experience. Coordinating with the Veilguard during battles can lead to devastating combo moves, enhancing the excitement of combat.
The mage gameplay stands out as engaging and versatile, offering more options for players to explore. The emphasis on Rook in combat, however, can make companion characters feel less impactful, which may require some adjustment for seasoned players.
Rook takes Queen, Checkmate
Dragon Age: The Veilguard signals a return to Bioware’s roots, focusing on single-player RPG experiences and compelling narratives. The creative director, John Epler, expressed excitement at revisiting the studio’s strengths and delivering an engaging game. With positive feedback from previews, fans can anticipate an immersive and satisfying experience in Veilguard.
As Halloween approaches, hopes are high that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will live up to its potential and deliver the beloved Dragon Age experience fans have been longing for.
