VW’s ChatGPT: Your Questions Answered

Published:

Volkswagen has announced the rollout of its enhanced in-car AI voice assistant, IDA, featuring locally processed and cloud-based responses from models like ChatGPT. Starting on September 6th, this new feature will be available in select models, including the 2025 Jetta, Jetta GLI, and the 82kWh battery version of the 2024 ID.4, with more models to follow later this year.

Drivers in vehicles that support ChatGPT will require a subscription to VW’s Plus Speech with AI service to access this feature. Volkswagen plans to introduce the new AI voice assistance capabilities in most of its 2025 models, including the ID.4, ID Buzz, GTI, Golf R, and Tiguan, with varying subscription plans. Some models will offer free access for a limited period, while others may require individual subscriptions.

At CES in January, Volkswagen initially revealed its integration plan for ChatGPT, in collaboration with automotive chatbot company Cerence. The company explained that when requests become more complex, Cerence will take over from IDA. For tasks like providing restaurant recommendations or storytelling, the cloud-based chatbot models will come into play. Volkswagen claims that IDA can handle locally processed natural language requests for certain functions, enhancing the user experience.

In conclusion, Volkswagen’s introduction of the enhanced in-car AI voice assistant, IDA, marks a significant step towards offering a seamless and advanced driving experience for its customers. By integrating locally processed and cloud-based responses from models like ChatGPT, Volkswagen is setting new standards for in-car technology and user convenience.
