Between 2021 and 2023, the world of “X-Men” comics was enlivened by an annual event known as the Hellfire Gala. Orchestrated within the storyline by Emma Frost’s Hellfire Trading Company, this yearly celebration was held on the island of Krakoa and welcomed all mutants. The gala was a grand affair, mirroring the glamour and extravagance of the real-world Met Gala, with attendees donning elaborate, eye-catching, and costly attire. The complete ensemble of the 2021 Hellfire Gala, masterfully crafted by artist Russell Dauterman, can be seen below.

In the real world, Marvel commemorated the event by releasing three special “Hellfire Gala” one-shots each year. These publications converged around the gala, incorporating it into various “X-Men” comic series. Notably, the character Rogue, as portrayed by Zann, sported a costume inspired by the Hellfire Gala 2023 design. The creator of this costume, artist Luciano Vecchio, expressed his delight and surprise on Twitter.
So, this happened:
The ICONIC @ZannLenore , who plays Rogue in X-Men ´97, recreated the look I designed for X-Men Hellfire Gala 2023 and wore it at The Emmys!
I’m speechless, mind blown, dead and reborn, not in my wildest dream could I have imagined this.
Thank you Lenore!!! pic.twitter.com/d6j9GqWY9M

Rogue’s outfits at the 2021 and 2022 Hellfire Galas offer an interesting contrast. In 2021, she donned a stylish green collar-and-gloved-suit, designed by Dauterman. The following year, artist Mad Mahmud Asrar created a fur-trimmed bodysuit for her, which covered all her skin except her face, a necessary precaution given her potentially harmful absorbing powers.

Vecchio’s 2023 design, as well as Zann’s recreation of it, effectively communicates character through fashion. The long green opera gloves, for instance, serve the practical purpose of preventing Rogue from making skin contact, a necessity given her powers. The hood covering her neckline further reinforces this. The upper half of the costume is a long, elegant dress befitting a Southern Belle. However, it splits at the waist to reveal black leather shorts, fishnets, and knee-high boots, a design element that reflects Rogue’s assertive, action-oriented nature.
Zann truly committed to the occasion, choosing not just any Rogue costume, but one specifically designed for a prestigious event like the Emmys.
Fans can watch “X-Men ’97” on Disney+. The second season is currently in production.
