Youth Lagoon, the celebrated indie project of Idaho-based artist Trevor Powers, embraces the concept of death in his latest track “Speed Freak” from the upcoming album, Rarely Do I Dream, set for release on Feb. 21 via Fat Possum.

Trevor Powers shared that “Speed Freak” was inspired by the idea of embracing death and giving the angel of death a hug. The song captures a sense of eerie serenity, driven by a distorted synth pulse that transitions into softer tones as Powers croons, “Tear me down/Like the dream in the face of my daughter/I feel sorry/I’m a speed freak.”
Powers reflects on the transient nature of life and the inevitability of transformation. He emphasizes the importance of letting go of one’s identity and embracing change. The song conveys a message of acceptance and renewal, urging listeners to confront their fears and uncertainties.
“Speed Freak” also incorporates a nostalgic element with a sample from an old home movie. Powers delved into his past, unearthing memories from 1993 and weaving them into his music. The samples aim to transport listeners to a different era while resonating with themes of self-discovery and growth.
In addition to “Speed Freak,” Rarely Do I Dream will feature three previously released tracks: “Football,” “Lucy Takes a Picture,” and “My Beautiful Girl.” Powers collaborated with co-producer Rodaidh McDonald to bring this album to life.
Youth Lagoon is set to embark on a tour in support of Rarely Do I Dream starting this spring. The tour kicks off on March 27 in Spokane, Washington, and concludes on May 16 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tickets for all shows will be available for purchase on Jan. 10.
Rarely Do I Dream follows the success of Youth Lagoon’s 2023 album, “Heaven Is a Junkyard,” marking a return to the spotlight after a brief hiatus. Powers’ musical journey has seen the release of two albums under his own name, showcasing his evolution as an artist.
